Henry Dalziel | Certified Ethical Hacker, EC Council | January 13, 2013
Certified Ethical Hacker is probably the best known IT Information Security certification on the market. Likely the name “hacker” in the designation gave the certification extra clout or awareness but we have no doubt to the value that the course presents and the employment opportunities contained therein.
What about the folks behind CEH – who are they?
Certified Ethical Hacker, CEH, is an information security course developed by the International Council of E-Commerce Consultants, abbreviated to EC-Council. EC-Council is a member-based organization that certifies professionals in information security skills and certifications.
The organization as said above is the owner and developer of the following courses: Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), Computer Hacking Forensics Investigator, (CHFI) and EC-Council Certified Security Analyst (ECSA) and the License Penetration Tester (LPT) certification. The organization is also involved in many other certification schemes, all promoted in over 88 countries.
Their stated mission (para-phrased from their website) is to: “validate information security professionals who are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge required in a specialized information security domain that will help them avert a cyber war, should the need ever arise“.
We have worked with EC-Council for a while now are we are certainly impressed with their commitment to their certifications. They currently (2013) have over 40,000 members, or better said, security professionals. These security professionals (who are also labelled as “ethical hackers” or “pentesters” are from highly reputable organizations around the world such as the US Army, US Navy, most of the three lettered US government agencies, Microsoft and the United Nations to name but a few.
Many of EC-Council’s information security certifications are internationally recognized and have received approval from many US and international government agencies. Along with CompTIA Security+ the CEH Designation has been included with the Department of Defence’s Directive 8570 which is a mandatory standard to be achieved by Computer Network Defenders Service Providers (CND-SP).
