Hacking group logos – who has the best one? Vote!

Hacking group logos – who has the best one? Vote!

Henry Dalziel | General Hacking Posts | June 20, 2013

Here’s our Concise Courses list of Hacker Groups or ‘hacking collectives’ if you prefer that term.

Rather than discuss the good, the bad and the ugly of these hacking groups, we thought we’d run a poll on whose logo is the coolest. Yes, possibly the least important aspect of what these hacking groups have achieved (or caused!) but we thought it would be a fun thing to do. So, this post will have a little bio on each of the groups with a poll letting you, the expert, decide on the winner.

Also! We’d really like to keep this post a work in progress so let us know if have missed a group by dropping a comment below.

OK, let’s get the ball moving in alphabetical order with, drum roll….

Anonymous
» Like the logo? Vote for it! (poll is at the end of the post)
If you haven’t seen this logo then you have been living in a cave. This is frankly, an amazing logo with a huge brand identity. When we were sorting through this list in the office a couple of the guys commented that the Anonymous logo is as recognizable as McDonald’s or Coke – a completely true fact. The suited business-style man with a question mark over his head, set against a U.N. globe is a brilliant design and is doing the job. Interestingly, the logo is accompanied by an even-more recognizable mask that their supporters and members wear: the Guy Fawkes mask. The Guy Fawkes mask was taken from the V for Vendetta graphic novel. We love this logo and well and truly congratulate the group for having as much marketing clout as the best paid brand consultants in in New York.

Chaos Computer Club (CCC)
» Like the logo? Vote for it! (poll is at the end of the post)
The CCC hails from Germany and is considered to be one of the oldest clubs out there. We imagine they are all sat around using old KNOPPIX or WHAX distro’s and firing-up old DOS command prompts. Good for them. The CCC describes itself as “a galactic community of life forms, independent of age, sex, race or societal orientation, which strives across borders for freedom of information….” Sounds good to us. But this post is about their logos!

Apparently the CCC logo even has a name – which is “chaosknoten” – and no, we don’t speak German so have no idea what that means. Anyone reading this who understands German please chime in with the comments below to help us understand what chaosknoten means. Thanks!

So the logo….we think it is great! It looks like a computer screen with cables coming out and it certainly embodies a sense of chaos!

OK moving on….

Cult of the Dead Cow
» Like the logo? Vote for it! (poll is at the end of the post)
These guys, like CCC have also been around a while. Started in 1984, three years after their German friends and they mostly hail from Texas, USA.

What can we say about the logo? Aside from the fact that it’s kick-ass there is little more that we can say! We get a sense that the cow is a Texan cow, or bull? It almost has a ‘don’t mess with Texas feel about it.’

Decocidio
» Like the logo? Vote for it! (poll is at the end of the post)
These guys are environmentalists (or so we understand, please correct us if we are wrong!) and their logo reflects that. The green certainly makes an earthy-feel which also blends into the old-school terminal User Interface of bright green with a black background. Definitely another brilliant logo and we’ll leave it to you to do the voting at the bottom of this post.

Global Kos
» Vote for this logo as the best at the end of the post
We think that this hacking group no longer exists? Please correct us if we are wrong. Regarding the logo, it looks nice and simple as text-based logo often do.

Goatse Security
» Like the logo? Vote for it! (poll is at the end of the post)
Also called GoatSec. We have to be honest – we are not sure what this logo represents! Please let us know and we will update this post. A really helpful visitor to this post told us the meaning of this logo! For more info go ahead and click here! [Be Warned Thou!]

Hackweiser
» Like the logo? Vote for it! (poll is at the end of the post)
Clearly a play on the Heineken logo. Awesome and we love it as much as we love the beer. Vote at the bottom of the post please!

Honker Union
» Like the logo? Vote for it! (poll is at the end of the post)
These guys all come from mainland China but we can’t decipher the logo – if anyone reading this is Chinese and knows what the characters mean please drop a comment below.

L0pht
» Like the logo? Vote for it! (poll is at the end of the post)
Affiliated to the Cult of the Dead Cow these guys have been around for a while – in fact since 1992. Their logo is also awesome – it has an almost art-deco feel to it (hey we aren’t art connoisseurs ok!) and from our research the second character has a slashed zero which was used by old teletypewriters and some character mode operating systems to represent zero. Our hunch is that this will be a contender for the much coveted Concise Courses Hacking Group Best Logo Awards of 2013!

Level Seven
» Like the logo? Vote for it! (poll is at the end of the post)
This group disbanded in the late 1990’s.

LulzSec
» Like the logo? Vote for it! (poll is at the end of the post)
As far as we can make out this well known group of hackers disbanded in 2011. The logo is brilliant and highly recognizable.

milw0rm
» Like the logo? Vote for it! (poll is at the end of the post)
Milw0rm is a hacking group that hacked their way into an Atomic Research Center in India! Their logo has a sense of malice about it – looks almost creepy! If you like this logo vote at the bottom of the page please!

TESO
» Like the logo? Vote for it! (poll is at the end of the post)
Highly stylized logo which looks great. These guys originated in Austria and quickly became well known for some serious exploits.

UGNazi
» Like the logo? Vote for it! (poll is at the end of the post)
Well. This logo certainly wins the prize for the strangest but we’ll leave it to you to decide if it wins our 2013 Concise Courses Hacking Group Logo of the Year Award!

A Summary Of The Logos!

Voting is now closed! However – here is a screenshot of the results as at November 25th 2014

Thanks for voting and we’d really appreciate your comments and feedback – especially with regards to interpretation of the logos and their meanings!

  • Andrea

Hackweiser is not a play on the Heineken logo… It’s the Budweiser* logo! Another fantastic beer! Eheheh

  • Evelyn Snow

    中国・红客:「Zhōng guó・hóng kè」
中国 is ‘China’, while 红客 means ‘red hacker’
红 means red/crimson, with connotations in relation to Communism.
客, normally meaning ‘guest’ is being used because it’s in the compound 黑客「hēi kè」(notice the similarity to the pronunciation of ‘hacker’?) which means ‘black guest’, ie ‘blackhat’.

So it seems like a clever play on words. They’re not blackhats so much as ‘redhats’.

    Chaosknoten….. Chaos knot.
