Henry Dalziel | Information Security Conferences | March 23, 2014
We made a popular list of upcoming Information Security conferences for 2014, 2015, 2016 and one of our new ventures this year is to post a monthly round-up of the upcoming round-ups – so, here’s April!
13th European Security Conference & Exhibition (April 1 – 2)
Kicking off on the first of April is the 13th European Security Conference & Exhibition which is being held at the Hague in the Netherlands. Keynote speakers include, Ivo Opstelten (Minister for Justice & Security, Netherlands), Rob Wainwright (Director, Europol) and Ray Mabus (Secretary of the Navy, USA). This conference focuses on the following themes: supply chain security, hotel security, intellectual property, oil and gas security, maritime piracy, terrorism, executive protection, internal theft and fraud, competitive intelligence, brand protection, physical security, cyber security, investigations, due diligence and global business issues. Clearly, a very broad and interesting security conference.

The USENIX Association is the Advanced Computing Systems Association and the 11th USENIX Symposium on Networked Systems Design and Implementation will be taking place at Seattle, WA, United States. This conference will contain discussions on the following subjects:

notacon (April 10 – 13)
Notacon is also taking place in Cleveland, Ohio, United States. This conference in their own words “explores the intersection of creativity, community and technology through presentations, discussions, competition and good old fashioned hacking”.
1st National Women in Cybersecurity Conference (April 11 – 12)
This is a special conference taking place in Nashville, TN, United States: “1st National Women in Cybersecurity Conference”. With the established shortfall of skilled IT Security Professions – this conference address the fact that women’s representation in this male-dominated field of security is alarmingly low.
International Conference on Cyber-Physical Systems (April 14 – 17)
The International Conference on Cyber-Physical Systems is taking place in Berlin, Germany. This is a particularly niche security conference: Cyber-physical systems (CPS). CPS systems are physical and engineered systems that monitor, coordinate and control communications.

Staying in Europe we note that the next significant IT InfoSec conference is the 2014 World Conference on Information Systems and Technologies which will be held at Madeira in Portugal.
Suits and Spooks (April 17)
Suits and Spooks will be taking place in San Francisco, USA. This will be a particularly interesting conference for those with an interest in Geo-political implications that affect cyber security. To that effect we note that the organizers of this event have dedicated the conference to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The conference will be addressing the legal status of cyber warfare, international law, cyber security, and human rights all within a Russia-Ukraine context.
InfoSec Southwest 2014 (April 19 – 21)

THOTCON 0×5 will be taking place in Chicago, United States. THOTCON is a small venue hacking conference based and is billed as a ‘non-profit, non-commercial event looking to provide the best conference possible on a very limited budget.’ Consider this as a ‘hackers conference’ in the real definition.
The United States Cyber Crime Conference (April 27 – May 2)
If you work in Cyber Law and Criminal Law then you must be attending this security conference. Along with the 2014 National Cyber Crime Conference – these are two ‘must attend’ events (see below – April 28). This event will be taking place at the National Conference Center, DC Metro Area, USA.

This conference is taking place outside the usual locations (i.e. Europe and the USA) – and will be happening at the Faculty of Engineering – Lebanese University, Campus of Hadath, Beirut – Lebanon.
