5 Hacking Documentaries (that are interesting)

Sure, there are a tons of great Hacker Movies, here’s a list, and by the way after a quick shout around in the office we came to the decision that our favorite is the portrayal of Lisbeth Salander in ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’.

Anyway – the reason why we like Hacker Documentaries is because they are in our opinion rather more informative than watching an exaggerated Hollywood Hacking/ Hackers Movie. Just quickly, on the subject of Hollywood and hacker movies, the author of this post visited the SkyFall James Bond Hacking island – you can watch that video here.

So, first on the list is: “How Hackers Changed the World

Made by the BBC which I guess brings a sense of ‘properness’ this documentary discusses the hacking culture by mostly exploring the origin and activities of Anonymous. The documentary interviews current members of Anonymous and 4chan etc. It is a solid documentary and if you have 45 minutes to kill, sure – watch it! The section on Cyber Warfare was particularly interesting for us, not least because of our association with InfoWarCon 2014. Sidepoint: If Cyber War is your thing then click here.

Second on our list is: “TPB AFK: The Pirate Bay Away From Keyboard

Yes, not strictly a ‘hackers documentary’ but we liked it because it is fascinating how the piracy/ legal system works – especially outside the US. Sidepoint: you’ve probably heard – one of the TPB co-founders is in a heap of trouble for allegedly have compromised networks to acquire documents: mashable will explain. This hacking documentary discusses the origin of The Pirate Bay and their legal woes.

Worth mentioning here the revelation that Hollywood studios such as Viacom and Fox tried to censor this documentary.

Third on our list is:”Hackers Wanted
Although a little old, this documentary, narrated by Kevin Spacey (whose voice is very listenable) takes a good look at the origins of hacking and where it is heading. The main focus of this film is to examine the adventures of Adrian Lamo.

Hackers – How they Steal Money” made fourth on our list
This is a very watchable documentary. Our favorite segment is the discussion with regards to social engineering.

Also, watch from 40 mins onwards and you’ll watch the late – and great – Barnaby Jack discuss his legendary ATM Hack [Black Hat 2010].

Last but not least and fifth on our list is “DEF CON: The Documentary
Sure, who doesn’t like DEF CON: it’s an awesome event! As the world’s largest hacking conference, held in Las Vegas, Nevada, this documentary was itching to be made. There are two cool things about this documentary, firstly – watch 4:06 and you will see the legend that is Winn Schwartau, who is also mentioned above, but also because DEF CON has a ‘no-filming’ policy with the sole exception being this documentary, and they were allowed full access to the event. If you are interested in information security conferences then watch it – you’ll love it.

Update, we’ve also got the conferences pages up for 2015 and 2016.

In Summary
What are your thoughts! We’d love to add to this list – so please chime in and hit us up with a recommendation!
